Unpopular Fiji Sun reporter breached Media Decree

Pratibha: Defamed SODELPA Youth leader.
Nasty piece of works gets done for breaching the Media Decree: about time.

Fiji Sun journalist Jyoti Pratibha has been writing biased stories for some time; her wings have now hopefully been clipped by MIDA, which has found she defamed complainant Pita Waqavonovono.

Bloggers will know Pratibha from her vile reporting for the regime favoured Fiji Sun news pages and cheap gawar Coconut Wireless column; she wrote the offending article about Waqavonovono late last year.

Pratibha, who has directed most of her poisonous attacks at SODELPA hierarchy and supporters, has been pinged for writing Waqavonovono should be "cleaned out" of SODELPA, and that he needed deodorant and a shave as well.

The decision has come from MIDA chairman Ashwin Raj, who has described the article as 'antagonistic, thoroughly yoked in the logic of race and bereft of facts'.

The story, of course, was one of the Sun's phallic efforts to promote Frank Bainimarama and make out the Opposition was 'racist and divisive' and holding the country back.

Pratibha's not so glorious missive Person of the Year: The PM who delivers, has now been found to be lacking 'balance, accuracy and the principles of responsible journalism'.

The Fiji Sun has since circulated a rather feeble statement rejecting the MIDA decision as flawed citing what it says is 'one of Fiji's most experienced and respected lawyers, Suruj Sharma' whose legal opinion is that Raj's findings 'are clearly without legal and jurisdictional basis of facts of law'.

Peter Lomas' statement claims the reporting around the MIDA findings has also been 'poorly informed' and Pratiba has been subjected to a 'scurrilous smear campaign'.

In one of its own articles, the paper is now telling Raj he has until next Monday (March 9) to 'retract and apologise to the Fiji Sun'.

This blog has previously deleted numerous comments about Pratibha, believing she should be given the benefit of the doubt, especially as she was a woman, and a lot of the comments were derogatory, but like her employer she appears to have no or few ethics.

According to anecdotes we've heard, she is quarrelsome and hostile with her subjects and is quick to make trouble if she doesn't get her way.

We say to Pratibha, who has gone from ordinary hack to managing editor in what seems to be a very short time, and the Fiji Sun: suck it up, you were done fair and square, and it's been a long time coming.

Waqavonovono's complaint to Ashwin Raj:

RE: Person of the Year Article (27/12/14) FIJISUNI write to make a complaint on an article by Jyoti Phatibha in the FijiSun newspaper on the 27 December 2014 under the title Person of the Year.

I am most concerned with Ms Pratibha's decision to attack SODELPA, carrying inaccuracies into the hands of the papers readers. In claiming the Party was resoundingly defeated at the polls, that the party played the divisive race card and whilst falling short of campaigning for Fiji First, that SODELPA's policy's were in no way a contrast to Bainimarama's platform for delivering Economic, Security, Equality and Service to the people of Fiji.

This is a abuse of the newspapers privileges and a clear sign that people like Pratibha can-not be trusted to write neutral, factual and non personal articles, which are journalistic principles I thought guided your newspaper.

Where is the Proof that SODELPA played divisive racial politics in the lead up to the September 2014 General Elections? Where is the proof that SODELPA was canceled out in the national vote or resoundingly defeated and are not represented in Parliament?. Where is the proof that SODELPA via their manifesto and historic democratic governance since 2001 as SDL could not provide a platform for delivering Economic, Security, Equality and Service to the people of Fiji?
Fiji Sun has deliberately produced an article that is not factual and littered with one persons controversial ideas presented as attribution.

I personally think that the Fiji Sun, is fast bordering on embarrassment to Fiji's mainstream media and Ms Pratibha's lack of practice of Journalistic Ethics is a concern, and it seems very likely that Ms Pratibha and the Fiji Sun are seeking to distort facts, create animosity and rekindle racial slurs with it's constant hate reporting on anything political other then FIJI FIRST or Frank Bainimarama.

On the 23rd September 2014, I wrote to the Media Industry Development Authority and the Fiji Sun to complain about an article written by Ms Pratibha about me; where she demanded that I as the SODELPA Youth President should be 'cleaned out' of the Party. She also declared to the Nation that I should Shave and buy myself a deodorant. Since then, no retraction or apology has been issued.
Ms Pratibha also complained to The International Federation of Journalists regarding a story she had fabricated involving my Facebook posts - on the 10/09/14, the Federation reported that Ms Pratibha received threats and was a target of an assault after I posted a comment about her on my Facebook page. I hope Ms Pratibha has evidence that I have written so passionately about her (like she has about me) because uptill now, I have tried not to comment on her unprofessional journalistic skills. I also cannot can-not be blamed for all the racist comments and feelings generated by her articles and hate reporting. These are the fruits of the newspapers inaction over hate reporting and the distortion of the true feelings of indigenous people and our leaders. As a citizen of Fiji, and a reader of the Fiji Sun, I demand change in the Newspaper's reporting immediately.

I also demand that Ms Pratibha is disciplined for her racist, biased and hate reporting.

I also demand that Fiji Sun perform a background check on the facts calling SODELPA a racist Party; and immediately accept that Indigenous Rights is Human Rights, and the rights of Fiji's Indigenous population to self determination and safeguarding under International Human Rights Standards is not Racist but an exercise of our responsibilities as Indigenous People.

Where is Media Freedom when parcels of the Media act irresponsibly and act to promote one party rather then present a unbiased and factual approach to it's reporting

Mr Raj

I thank you for your swift response, I also ask, why are you waiting for FijiSun to respond? Does MIDA not have the resources or the time to investigate these serious claims immediately and make a suitable discernment on the matter

I draw your attention to a complaint made to MIDA on the airing of an advice to Frank Bainimarama by a member of the Tailevu Provincial Council in April 2014. In a statement to Fiji Citizens, you said
“Masquerading itself as an exercise in freedom of expression, political discourse has, in fact, descended to unabashed racial vilification and in some instances its content is tantamount to injurious or hate speech,” and in part without Fiji TV's official response did you not pass judgment.

Did MIDA wait for the official response of Radio New Zealand and Al Jazeera before claiming the organisations were guilty of biased, unbalanced and inaccurate reporting.

The reason why I think, seeking Fiji Sun's official response is nonsensical, is captured in my initial complaint. Since the 23rd September 2014, I have yet to receive a official response
from Fiji Sun and thus you have yet to 'adjudicate' on that matter.Mr Raj, I ask that you urgently look into this matter as Fiji Sun seems to be running wild on fabricating news and creating much racial tensions by attacking Indigenous Rights, Leaders and Consciousness
Mr Raj, I repost my demands herein

As a citizen of Fiji, and a reader of the Fiji Sun, I demand change in the Newspaper's reporting immediately.
I also demand that Ms Pratibha is disciplined for her racist, biased and hate reporting.
I also demand that Fiji Sun perform a background check on the facts calling SODELPA a racist Party; and immediately accept that Indigenous Rights is Human Rights, and the rights of Fiji's Indigenous population to self determination and safeguarding under International Human Rights Standards is not Racist but an exercise of our responsibilities as Indigenous People.

Every aspect of this case is disturbing.

I'm surprised to find Ashwin Raj showing the first glimmer of balance in his job.

I'm thoroughly sympathetic to Pita and disgusted by Jyoti's lack of journalistic ethics, now so typical of the Fiji Sun.

Nonetheless, I hasten to point out that in a society that permits true freedom of speech, none of this would be an issue.

Had Fiji true press freedom, Jyoti's piece could still have been published, but Pita would have enjoyed the right to reply.

Had Fiji true press freedom, Peter Lomas' Fiji Sun would have switched from its one-sided journalism to coupon printing a long time ago.

Had Fiji true press freedom, Ashwin would be back in school without a job.

Had Fiji true press freedom, Pita's complaint would have no basis. Jyoti could write anything she wants short of libel. Saying Pita is scruffy doesn't rise to that level, any more than saying Jyoti is a stupid bitch. Against charges of libel, truth is always the surest defence.

How could you even think of coming up with the RFMF taking control of the media? You serious? Do you realise whom they report to and would do all and anything to fend for Frank Bainimarama?

Any news targeting Sodelpa and its Supporters is good news to the Military and Frank and the corrupt who support this current government.

The Fiji Sun is biased because it works for Frank. This vile and despicable person in Jyoti is even worse. There is absolutely no sense of true media freedom in both the evil lawbreaking mouthpieces! Take Jyoti's disgraceful style of reporting and imagine her taking up employment abroad for some reputable newspaper company - her ugly fat ass will be kicked right out onto the streets where she deservedly belongs.

How she was able to write such a disgusting reprehensible article is very alarming and shocking. Fancy having CHEAP reporters working for Fiji Sun!

Only in a THUG nation under the rulership of THUGS will you find people like Peter Lomas, Jyoti and the entire Sun suckers showing off the 'powers' UNLAWFULLY bestowed upon them by the 'Bainimarama Government'.

Justice always has a way of destroying unjust and criminally-minded behaviour.

Serves you right Jyoti - maybe this is just the beginning of the worst to come if you don't change your ways for the better.

Peter Lomas - NO MORAL COMPASS - VIAVIA LEVU!

FIJI SUN - GET THIS - YOU ARE BIASED AND PRO GOVERNMENT AND UNWORTHY TO PROVIDE DAILY NEWS FOR THE PEOPLE OF FIJI.

Then Groenewald actually investigated and eventually even arrested seven police officers and a soldier —a soldier! — for the murder of Soko. And now, here is Ashwin Raj, of all people, finally taking some long-needed disciplinary action against one of the regime's most strident and shameless propagandists!

This regime has never shown the slightest balance or even-handedness in the past, so what gives? Might it have something to do with the upcoming conferences in Geneva?

Someone just said these reporters are vicious hyenas. My USP friend added they are the gestapo for Fiji First - tools of sloppy and lazy reporting, abundance of obvious superficiality, notable nuance, omission, lack of knowledge, investigative journalism a big nil, maybe insufficient education in this field of work or flat-out agenda-driven full of hatred lies and bias. Deliberately brutal and heartless. NO SHAME THESE PEOPLE!

Unqualified Reporters LIKE JYOTI is an excellent example. The Fiji Sun Reporters may all have a history of truancy in their school days. One just has to study the calibre of this woman? These fly-by-night journalists who live up to The Sun's undignified reputation should have more sense.

Well flogging Jyoti, every dog has it's day!! What sayest you now huh??

  14. THE COMING DESTRUCTION OF IRAN (ELAM) BY ISRAEL

Jeremiah 49:38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.

    Teaching
Elam is an ancient geographical location mentioned in the Bible. Today its location would be mainly in Iran with a small section in Iraq. It bordered with the ancient Babylonian Empire. The actual location of Elam would be the very northern end of the Persian Gulf and down along with the west coast of Iran. Today one of main sections of ancient Elam would include Bushehr Province with the capital city of Bushehr. On a map of the Persian Gulf, Bushehr would be directly across from Kuwait.

Bushehr is very important today because it is the location of Iran’s nuclear facility and has the attention of the world. Thus, the physical location of ancient Elam is critical today.
It is feared that Iran would use this plant to help build nuclear weapons to destroy Israel and threaten other nations. Israel has stated that it will not allow Iran to become a nuclear power, and it is very possible Israel will attack Iran to destroy this nuclear complex at Bushehr. It is also possible that World War 3 could start over the Bushehr nuclear plant. Thus, ancient Elam has become a focal point in dealing with Israel and fits directly into God’s prophetic plan as the world heads toward the day of the LORD.

THEREFORE IT IS A BIG RESPONSIBILITY WHEN YOU WRITE STUFF.

I'm amazed they did not teach her this at the Journalism School.

    Jyoti abused her privileged position.

The best way to solve this problem is for Pita to sue her.

But so, too, should the Fiji Times and other newspapers. And if one writes something false, the others should set the record straight. And if it persists in publishing falsehoods, its circulation should fall and its advertising revenue dry up. And if the government should insist on propping it up, that government should be voted out of office. And if that government steals the election, that government should be overthrown and its leaders arrested, tried fairly, and hanged,

  30. Spy report

    Friday, March 06, 2015

NEW ZEALAND Prime Minister John Key has come under heavy public scrutiny on allegations of spying in the Pacific, in particular Fiji.

US National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden's documents released on WikiLeaks on Thursday, dominated by an assessment of mobile phone operators in the Pacific, suggested that Mr Key's Government had been listening in on Fiji's military, police and government calls made on a mobile network.

The New Zealand Prime Minister has so far denied these allegations in a press conference in New Zealand

In an interview with TVNZ, Mr Key rubbished claims by Snowden that New Zealand spied illegally on Kiwis holidaying in Fiji.

He has ruled out Snowden's allegations.

Fiji military commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga last night said the allegations on New Zealand listening in on Fiji's military was "their business".

"Talk to the New Zealand Government officials. We are not going to make any comments on the matter," Brig-Gen Tikoitoga told this newspaper last night.

Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald said he would investigate the matter.

"That's news to me. I am not aware of it but with the technology of today, it is not impossible. I will investigate," he said last night.

Several attempts to get a comment on the matter from Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola via mobile phone last night proved futile.

According to the Snowden's documents, it claimed the spy included finding out who was issuing the orders in the military but failed because of major players in New Zealand switching to a new phone provider.

The documents suggested that a mobile company was changing the spying game across the

In a New Zealand media report, Samoa's PM Tuilaepa Sailele dismissed the allegations that New Zealand was spying on his country.

Mr Sailele was quoted saying that he was surprised that the Americans would be at all interested in the phone conversations of an old matai, or chief, asking his son in New Zealand for money.

Cashflow gaps which one can trace back to inflated budgeted asset sales revenues and a raft of big cash gurgling policies including the ever increasing military budget which is a constant drain on public funds and doesn't really generate any real returns to the economy except soldiers who harm unarmed civilians but surrender without a fight in the face of barely armed terrorist. So we can always expect Jyoti to wax lyrical about all this big achievements!

  60. Hey just wondering, why is the
    Development in Pacific Harbour
appears to be taking a mark-times
in the last 45 years? This was
suppose to be the blue print of
    modern Fiji?
Hey Khaiyum since we're paying you
a lot of dough to hold so many position with Fiji First-why don't
you investigate the reason why this
    old development is not moving?Why
not turn this place into a city
    with it's own council& Mayor?There
are thousand of un-used lots yet
the number of people crying for
Fijian land seems to be climbing
every day? New Pearl Pacific Hotel
    addition is been build alongside
this nice area but roads are getting awful and very little new
    housing is been build? Come-on
Khaiyum- get it together and lets
see you work a little harder for
    the money we're paying you???

  61. Hey people listen up, jyoti is a
distraction tool for the Fiji First
    like Ashwin Raj,Khaiyum & others?
I worked with her and i can't stand
    the stench she imparts everytimes
she walks by my desk? She truely
need to take a bath or shower-which
ever comes first? You think maybe
she is the type of bitch that don't
believe in washing your pussy after
    pissin? I'm only saying???

  62. So what has happen to the Fiji Flag
Fiji first disaster? Wasn't the idea an excellent one? why is it
    that our opposition parties seems
to dislike the idea? Is it because
it was brought to the fore by the
dump-ass Bainimarama? I mean the guy is a NO SCHOOL DUMP-ASS who
failed his Fiji Junior exam? Here
are two-one high school former teacher& an University Professor-
    been demoted as opposition leaders
    in our new parliament? why
    couldn't they think about this
great change for Fiji? I say give
it up guys...as your SODELPA supporter i urge you both to give
Frank his due, the change is long
overdue? If you feel a committe is
    needed so establish it?

  63. Anonymous 1:22 AM's contemptuous remarks about our flag show the FFP mindset very well. Such statements about the flag that has represented Fiji throughout its existence, the flag that we have fought and contested under, of which we have sung, under which we've marched, the flag we have proudly waved, such vulgar statements show a black and diseased heart riddled through with treason most foul.

  65. No surprise that the Fiji Sun is full of mega crap in their reporting that even their dumbest reporter Jyoti went too far by defaming on a SODELPA youth leader.

The only thing that Fiji Stunk needs retracting, is their arses since they have nothing better to do than constantly report about how much they love sitting on Bhaiyum's lap.

And yet she got a promotion but then did mediocre reporting equivalent to that of someone from high school......what a joke!

  66. Easy to see the juvenile handiwork of FFP on this blogsite now, with puerile comment after comment about vudis and stinky pussy. I'm confident that the blog administrator would find that most of these crude comments seem to originate from the same few IPs. I'm one of those who would defend Jyoti's right to publish her political views, however distasteful. But what I'm reading here are not political views but politically motivated trash talk. I think it high time the moderator cleaned up this site, maybe even blocked certain IPs.

If Pacific Harbour becomes a town, foreigners or even dual citizenship owners won't be able to purchase a residential building there... so that would be a problem...

Pacific Harbour was, like any other development, a bit of a gamble. The high prices being asked for a property overthere, or even the very "local" high cost of living (your banana bunch in PH is twice or thrice the normal price) makes it a very unlikely spot for a lot of locals... Time will tell if the real estate market will collapse a bit, but my bet is that it will be a buyer's market for some time as there are so many empty lots...

So what's that to do with lovely Jyoti? mmm

His post is about how he does not support the demeaning and obscene language aimed against Ro Teimumu and Ratu Naiqama and anyone for that matter. I do not support too the same kind of languages used against Bainimarama and Khaiyum.

While I don't hold any grudge against its removal I think it's fair that the blog administrators of c4.5 remove all articles/comments that are similar in nature. One rule applies to all, not only to some. I thought C4.5 is a free medium where everyone is free to voice their opinion, suggestion, etc without fear and prejudice.
Well, long live C4.5. At least I contribute for few hours. Bon voyage. And long live Fiji. Like to see a new regime. Not this one.

Those who are allowed by God to live past their due dates are there for His divine reasons and purposes and one of those reasons is to try to educate people like you on proper manners. If you wish to to still use swear words to demean a son or daughter of God, you go ahead, but don't ever think that God will not hold you responsible.

One day you will realize that God will not be mocked, but I hope it will not be too late.
